COAL TOWNSHIP - The Coal Township High School Alumni Association will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a banquet at Masser's Banquet Hall on May 29. Any student who attended Coal Township High School is encouraged to attend. The banquet is an evening set aside to renew friendships and reflect on high school memories.
Any member that did not receive an invitation should call Samuel Weaver, 644-1005; Doris Ziemba, 644-0737, or Sarann and Tom Keyack, 644-0115. An update of address listings is in progress, and graduates are encouraged to register their addresses.
An election of officers for the upcoming year will be held. Anyone interested in nominating an officer or becoming an officer should contact Theresa Targonski Sandri, 672-2963, nominating committee chairperson. The current officers are: President, Samuel Weaver, class of 1964; vice president, James Gresavage, class of 1946; secretary, Doris Olley Ziemba, class of 1964; treasurer, Diane Grego Kerstetter, class of 1964; and historians, Sarann Golden Keyack and Thomas Keyack, class of 1957.
The 2011 Coal Township scholarships will be awarded. Any Shamokin Area senior who signed up for the scholarship test is eligible for the Coal Township Alumni scholarship money. Testing took place in April. The Coal Township Alumni presents seven scholarships representing more than $16,000 each year for the four years of secondary education to the winners.
The 2011 Coal Township Scholarships are awarded for four years of secondary education. They are:
- George Nagle Scholarship - $3,000 per year
- Frank Marcinek Scholarship - $2,500 per year
- George Lytle Scholarship - $2,000 per year
- Coal Township Alumni Scholarships - two scholarships at $2,000 per year
- Anthony K. Konopka Scholarship - $2,000 per year, awarded to the third-ranked Shamokin Area High School graduate.
- Northumberland County Career and Technology Center Scholarship - $2,500 per year.
Weaver reported the alumni helped 34 high school graduates with $75,000 in scholarship money in 2010.
Anniversary class pictures will be taken by Harry Deitz. Entertainment will be provided by "The Shoreliners." Class members donating $100 or more to the scholarship fund will become members of the Coal Township Alumni Century Club. The alumni association depends on the generosity of Coal Township graduates to continue the scholarship awards.
