SHAMOKIN - Former Shamokin Area School Board member Robert Getchey has announced his candidacy to be elected back to the board.
"I previously served on the board for 12 years," Getchey said. "Due to health reasons, I didn't run four years ago. I'm doing much better now and I'm ready to serve the students and taxpayers of the district."
Getchey is running on the Democratic and Republican ballots. He says he knows the needs of students and the people of the communities. He knows that everyone must work together to make Shamokin Area the best it can be, to watch the spending due to cutbacks in public education.
"I believe that children's health, safety and education is important in creating a better school environment. We must continue to work well with our neighboring school districts to help fight against public education cutbacks," Getchey said.
He says that the Shamokin School District campuses are one of the nicest in Northeastern Pennsylvania and that the district should work to encourage students to get involved in more activities and programs within the school.
Robert is the son of the late Emory and Josephine Getchey of Shamokin. He is married to the former Susan Povish, and they have one daughter, Maria, who is attending Susquehanna University.
