Ralpho receives grant for sewage enforcement

ELYSBURG - Ralpho Township has been awarded a sewage facilities enforcement grant for $635.76. Township secretary Debi Olson read a letter at the supervisors' meeting Tuesday from Rep. Kurt Masser about the grant.

In other business, supervisors awarded the contract for the 2011 paving project to Eastern Industries, Winfield, at a bid of $146,883. The contract for tarring and chipping was awarded to Keystone Paving and Materials, Watsontown, for $20,038.

Olson gave a brief summary of the recently published Census Report. The report shows a 15 percent increase in population and 22 percent in housing over the past 10 years. Olson said that the full report is available on the township's website, www.ralphotownship.org for public viewing.

Upon the recommendation of Harvey Boyer of the planning commission, supervisors appointed Dan Yost be approved to fill an open seat on the commission. The seat will come up for reappointment in December.

Supervisors accepted the withdrawal of land development plans for a tree house project requested by Cathy Scherer at May's meeting..

Roadmaster Howard Shadduck announced that a trash cleanup will take place July 27 and 28.

With Shadduck's six-month probationary period ending, supervisors voted to continue his employment with a one-dollar hourly increase in salary. Members of the board expressed their gratitude to Shadduck for the exemplary work he has done. "I have people who make me look good," Shadduck said. "I have a good team."

Chairman Ed Payeski asked the board to approve a salary increase for part-time road crew worker Doyle Horne. Supervisors agreed to raise Horne's salary by $1.25, bringing his hourly rate to $13.

Supervisor William Wetzel told the board there has been no evidence of vandalism in the playground since closing time was changed to 9 p.m.

Reports were accepted from the zoning and police departments, as well as manager, solicitor and engineer's reports.

Major was absent from this month's meeting.
