HARRISBURG - A state health care program helping thousands of low-income adults is set to expire after Monday amid ongoing debate between Gov. Tom Corbett and Democratic lawmakers over how to provide inexpensive replacement coverage.
The state Insurance Department sent letters to beneficiaries notifying them their coverage under the adultBasic program is ending because the program exhausted its funds. Officials urged individuals to schedule any doctor appointments or medical procedures before coverage ends.
The main funding source for the adultBasic program during the past five years has been financial contributions from the surpluses maintained by the four Blue Cross insurers in Pennsylvania that was made available under a 2005 state law.
That funding stream has ended as Pennsylvania enters a third year of recession-spurred
