COAL TOWNSHIP - A career symposium for students from five area schools will be held Thursday at Northumberland County Career and Technology Center.
The objective is to raise awareness of educational and skill requirements for students to attain their career goals, according to a release about the event.
Students from Shamokin Area, Mount Carmel Area, Line Mountain, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional and Northwestern Academy are expected to attend.
The symposium, co-sponsored by Brush Valley Chamber of Commerce and CSO Community Action Agency, begins at 8:30 a.m. and will end at 1:30 p.m. It is geared toward sophomores, but juniors and seniors are welcome.
The main speaker is educational consultant and author Daniel Perna, who will present "Eight Questions for Success."
Perna's 30 years of experience in public education include serving as an English teacher, high school principal and assistant superintendent, according to a biography at www.corwinpressspeakers.com.
He is now an adjunct teacher in graduate education at Wilkes University and as an advisor to doctoral students in educational leadership at NOVA Southeastern University.
Marla Kane, of Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, will speak of career exploration and paying for a post-secondary education.
James Monaghan, the career and technology center's administrative director, will be joined by teachers of the vocational school to speak of careers in trades, while Maureen Hauck, of the Small Business Development Center at Bucknell University, will present a workshop.
Participating vendors include Triangle Tech, U.S. Army and Reserves, area CareerLinks, county agencies and state civil service, Shamokin Aikido Kai, Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, VNA Health Systems, Empire Beauty School, Pennsylvania College of Technology, Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit and Harrisburg Area Community College.
