CATAWISSA RR - The Southern Columbia Area teachers union voted to remain in the CS Trust for their health insurance and benefits, according to Superintendent Charlie Reh.

The board had previously decided to explore their option in terms of health care coverage for their teachers, hoping to save at least $200,000 a year if they left the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) and chose a different insurance provider. The teachers might have even realized a savings depending on their plan.

However, explained Reh Monday night at the board meeting, the teachers voted 58-46 to remain with the CSIU.

The district, like many other school districts in the state, have been facing massive cuts in public education funding in the governor's proposed budget for 2012-13 fiscal year. They have been searching for different and creative ways to fill deficits without cutting programs or teachers.

The district pays 75 percent of the health insurance for teachers, a point Florey Guarno, of Locust Township, brought up as a reason the district should be able to switch insurances if the board so desires.

Solicitor Rich Roberts explained the contracts called for the CS plan or one of equal value, but the district consultant said it would be nearly impossible to find a plan exactly like the current plan.

However, Director Tim Vought agreed with Guarno.

"I say we take the gamble and change it," he said.

The board will be looking for other ways to fill their budget holes. Meanwhile, the negotiating committee will be meeting with the teachers to discuss their options.

In other business, the board approved:

- The purchase of additional Ethernet switches and mounting accessories for the middle school addition from Prism Works Technology Inc. in the amount of $9,415.12.

- Letha Stone as the musical director for the 2011-12 school year at an annual $2,064.

- The resignation of JoEllen Gallinot from the position of head varsity girls basketball coach effective April 16. She had been in the position since 2008.
