Moran employee quits authority
LEWISBURG - Dennis Shaffer, an employee of Moran Industries, has resigned his seat on the SEDA-Council of Governments Joint Rail Authority board.
Shaffer told The Daily Item in Sunbury that continued service on the board could have constituted a conflict of interest since John Moran, president of Moran Associates in Watsontown has offered to buy the rail line for $12.5 million.
Two relief groups in compliance
HARRISBURG - Auditor General Jack Wagner reported audits have determined that the East Cameron Township Volunteer Firefighters Relief Association (VFRA) and the Shamokin Volunteer Firefighters Relief Association are in compliance with tested laws and regulations.
VFRAs are non-profit organizations established to afford financial protection to volunteer firefighters who suffer misfortune as a result of their participation in fire service. VFRAs receive state aid through a 2 percent state tax on fire insurance purchased by Pennsylvania residents from insurance companies incorporated outside of the commonwealth. The funds are used to pay for insurance to protect volunteer firefighters, purchase fire equipment and cover volunteer training expenses. VFRAs are distinct separate legal entities from fire companies.
Join 'Project Blue Light'
HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania residents are asked to display a blue light in their home or office windows during the holiday season to remember fallen law enforcement officers and their survivors, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said.
"Project Blue Light" was developed by C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), a nonprofit organization based in Missouri that represents more than 15,000 families of officers killed in the line of duty.
"The color blue is symbolic of peace," Noonan said. "By displaying blue lights, you will show you support America's law enforcement officers. Any police officer passing by it on some dark, cold winter night will be warmed by the kindness it implies."
