Catholic Daughters of the Americas

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA) Court Our Lady of Victory No. 588 held a December breakfast meeting at the Mt. Carmel Senior Center on Dec. 10.

Regent Mary C. Wydra called the meeting to order and the Rev. Frank Karwacki, chaplain, led the opening prayers followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the opening ode.

The minutes from the November meeting were read and approved.

The financial secretary reminded members that 2012 dues are due and can be mailed to Rosemarie Koronkiewicz.

The Standing Rules Committee presented the final draft, which was approved as submitted.

The Fund Raising Committee's Christmas pin sale was a success. There are only a few pins remaining.

Members visited residents of the Mount Carmel Nursing Home and Assisted Living on Tuesday, and gave each resident a Christmas card and gift. Carols were sung during the visit.

Education co-chairpersons, Judith Hooper and Eileen Moroz, said contest guidelines were given to Mount Carmel Area School and Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School. The theme of the contest is "Inspiring Others to Grow." Monetary prizes will be awarded for photography entries from students in grades nine through 12 and for art entries from students in grades six through eight.

Adult Catholic Daughters can participate in the contest with entries in the following categories: essay, poetry, art, computer art, music and photography. The deadline for entries is Jan. 13.

Members discussed the possibility of forming a junior court for Catholic girls ages six to 18. The membership drive for the junior court will begin in March.

Julie Griffiths, vice-regent, sid the court's 100 year old nativity is on display in the Mount Carmel Public Library window.

Members decided to send "Merry Christmas" cards to the ACLU office in New York.

The court's traditional "Twelve Days after Christmas" party will be held at the Mount Carmel Senior Center at 1 p.m. Jan. 8. Members should contact Mary Wydra at 339-4795 if they wish to attend.

Information on the National CDA Convention in Omaha was distributed. Delegates to the convention will be elected at a brief meeting in January following the Christmas party.

A baby bottle was passed around for members to donate loose change, which will be sent to the state CDA for pro-life activities.

Wydra thanked everyone for the delicious food made for the breakfast meeting.

Karwacki led the closing prayer, members sang the closing ode and the meeting was adjourned.
