Local organizations receive over $72K in grant funding

RIVERSIDE - Twelve local community organizations, including Anthracite Citizens Theatre, Mount Carmel, and Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities, will receive a total of $72,551 in funding, ranging from grants of $2,370 to $10,000 through the Fall 2011 Cherokee Community Grant Program. Funding will support a range of projects and programs, including a computing initiative in a local children's library, an initiative to fight hunger among middle school children, and an aggressive driver awareness program, among others.

"These organizations touch the lives of every single person in our communities, either directly or indirectly," says Justin Noll, Cherokee Pharmaceuticals plant manager. "By supporting their programs, we are able to support our entire community."

Since 1994, the Merck Cherokee Plant in Riverside has donated over $3 million to schools, non-profit and community organizations throughout the local area through its Community Grant Program.

Funding to Anthracite Citizens Theatre (ACT) is in support for its 2012 summer show.

The grant to the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities will support the council's Arts and Education Summer Art Program/Mural Project to be held at the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library over the summer. The project is a four-week summer program for children that will continue into a mural project in the community.

Also receiving grants from Cherokee are Snyder County Libraries Inc., "Many Hands Helping Others" in the Danville Area School District, Husky Research Corporation, Danville Area School District science fair, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Danville Borough Police Department disaster preparedness program, Riverside Police Department for aggressive driving awareness, Central PA Rowing Association, Camp Mount Luther and Columbia-Montour Council BSA.
