SHAMOKIN - City council adopted the final version of its 2012 budget and tax levy Thursday.
The balanced budget totals $2,570,667.85 and is unchanged from the tentative version approved last month. The 2012 budget is down 2 percent from the current year's spending plan.
The real estate tax levy totals 44.918, with 30 mills for general purposes, 11.168 mills for debt service, 0.75 mills for the library tax and 3 mills for recreation, which is up from 2 mills in the 2011 levy.
A city property owner will pay $44.92 for each $1,000 in assessed value of a taxable property.
It's been said in city hall that 1 mill generates about $35,000 revenue based on an 82 percent tax collection rate.
The 30 mills for general purposes is 5 mills above the maximum allowed under Third Class City Code, an allowance granted Wednesday in Northumberland County court for the fourth year running.
Council's action Thursday brings an end to budgetary proceedings.
In-depth discussions on the proposed budget were first held in public at a special meeting in early November and continued into December. Two additional special meetings were held to pass the tentative and final versions of the budget.
No city residents spoke on the matter during any of the public meetings, which were sparsely attended.
