WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Tom Marino is launching a 10th Congressional District Veterans History Project as a way to honor the men and women who served in the armed forces. The project, which will include the recording of veterans' oral histories, is being done in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Library of Congress.
The project coincide with the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
"It is difficult to believe it has been 70 years since this critical moment in our nation's history," Marino said. "It is so important that we capture the captivating stories of the men and women who so valiantly risked life and limb to protect our country and our liberties. They embody the true American spirit and it is vital that we record their tales so future generations will always remember them and honor them."
Marino said his staff will videotape veterans who are willing to share their stories on camera. The footage will be stored on a YouTube channel and will be submitted to the Library of Congress.
The congressman said he hopes that veterans will respond to his call for participation in the project and expressed concern that many World War II veterans die each day. The last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, Frank Buckles, died in February at age 110.
Marino's district includes Bradford, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Union, Wayne and Wyoming counties and parts of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming and Tioga counties.
