MOUNT CARMEL - Officers for 2012 for the James A. Garfield Camp No. 43, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, were elected at a meeting on Nov. 9.
Elected were David Berezovske, commander; William Beaumont, senior vice commander; Bruce Petro, junior vice commander; J. Kevin Jones, Mark Kline and Walter Watkins IV, council; Hugh Jones, secretary and treasurer; William Van Stone Sr., patriotic instructor; and Harry White Jr., chaplain. Also elected were Hugh Jones, grave registration officer and historian; J. Kevin Jones, Eagle Scout coordinator, and Ray Rothermel, Civil War memorials officer.
Quarterly meetings for 2012 were set for March 14, May 9, Sept. 12 and Nov. 14. Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. at the Lithuanian Social Club.
As part of Mount Carmel's 150th anniversary in 2012, the camp will host an encampment of the 149th Pennsylvania Bucktails Volunteer Infantry. The encampment will be held during the Memorial Day holiday, from Friday, May 25, through Monday, May 28. The Bucktails will take part in the Mount Carmel Memorial Day parade and services, and other events are being scheduled for that weekend.
Named in honor of the nation's 20th president and a major general during the Civil War, Garfield Camp was formed May 9, 1883, and chartered Aug. 11 of that year. A member of the Mount Carmel Area Joint Veterans Committee, it is the oldest veteran-affiliated organization in the borough.
