SHAMOKIN - The tie breaker of most points scored by a team was needed to determine the top two placewinners Week 7 of The News-Item Football Contest.

Vanessa Nicola, of 505 E. Kase Street, Shamokin, and Thomas Bator, of 133 Colorado Circle, Kulpmont, were the only two papers that correctly showed 12 out of 12 selections, so the judges needed to go with the most points scored in the contest, 55 by Texas A&M in their win over Baylor Saturday.

Nicola guessed 52 points as the top score, while Bator selected 49. Nicola was closer, which earned her a $50 gift certificate as first place winner. For finishing second, Bator will receive a $25 gift certificate for the participating businesses in the contest.

Eighteen entrants finished the week with 11 out of 12 correct, but Sharon Wyland, of 106 Second St., Ranshaw, was the only one to correctly pick 55 points as the top score, winning a $15 gift certificate.

The three winners and the other entrants that picked 11 out of 12 games correct will be entered in the $200 cash prize drawing at the end of the season. The qualifiers were: Karen Slotterback, of Mount Carmel; Ashley Sabo, of Coal Township; Emily Gunderman, of Mount Carmel; Kathy Ruchko, of Mount Carmel; Joe Consevage, of Mount Carmel; Mike Trocki, of Mount Carmel; Mike Palewicz, of Mount Carmel; Philip Wyland, of Shamokin; Ed Wojcik, of Kulpmont; Barbara Scott, of Shamokin; Merril DeGreen, of Elysburg; Rose Mary Nye, of Trevorton; Marie Snyder, of Shamokin; Adam Marcinek, of Coal Township; Lou Ferrari, of Coal Township; Bob Demshock Jr. of Shamokin; Jim Boris, of Coal Township.
