BURNSIDE - Route 125 south of Shamokin opened Saturday morning to all traffic following more than two weeks of closure due to a large mine subsidence.

PennDOT Community Relations Coordinator Rick Mason reported at 10:51 a.m. Saturday that remedial work along Route 125 south of Shamokin had been completed, opening the road back up.

A PennDOT crew used rock to backfill a substantial portion of the void last weekend. After several days of monitoring it for any settling, the crew then placed 85 cubic yards of concrete atop the rock, along with additional backfill to finish the project.

One cubic yard of concrete represents a measurement of three feet by three feet by three feet.

The mine void that opened had an opening at the surface of 20 feet and a depth of at least 200 feet.

While the road was closed since Sept. 21, a detour that used Upper Road and Routes 225 and 61 was implemented.
