BURNSIDE - PennDOT hopes to reopen Route 125 south of Shamokin by Tuesday.
A PennDOT crew over the weekend used rock to backfill a substantial portion of a large mine subsidence at the site, the agency reported Tuesday. The backfilling is being monitored to see if any settling occurs. If no settling occurs, the crew is scheduled to place 85 cubic yards of concrete atop the rocks today. Once the concrete cures, additional backfilling will take place to finish the project.
One cubic yard of concrete represents a measurement of three feet by three feet by three feet.
Barring any unforeseen issues, PennDOT is optimistic Route 125 can be reopened to traffic by Tuesday, Oct. 11, according to a statement.
In the meantime, a detour that uses Upper Road and Routes 225 and 61 remains in effect.
The mine void that opened Sept. 21 was 20 feet wide at the surface and at least 200 feet deep, according to PennDOT. The highway has been closed in the area since then.
