HERNDON - Borough resident Von Nichols attended Monday's council meeting to express concern over an extensive amount of water flowing down Pottsville Street that isn't making it into a drainage pipe.
He expressed frustration over staying up at night when there is heavy rainfall because water is getting into his basement. Nichols also let borough officials know the home next to him, which has been in foreclosure, has been completely let go to the point he feels it should be condemned. He asked borough officials for help in contacting the bank now holding the deed.
"They probably don't know where Herndon is and they could care less about me," Nichols said.
He said the spouting on the property is shot, adding to the water problems at his property.
Mayor Richard Sweppenhiser thanked Nichols for letting them know of the situation.
"We don't know unless you tell us," he said.
After a brief discussion, plans were made to contact the borough solicitor and others who might be able to assist with remedying the problem.
Abandoned vehicles
Borough officials also discussed the issue of abandoned vehicles along Railroad Avenue. Concerned for the feasibility of snow plows being able to navigate in that area this winter, coupled with the fact these cars have been sitting here for several months, a decision was made to contact the state police for removal.
Line painting was completed in the borough on Sept. 26. The mayor also reported on positive feedback regarding the addition of crosswalks in the center of town.
Flooding refunds
Secretary Ann Botkin said information has been received from FEMA to explain procedures for receiving reimbursement for hours worked during recent flooding. Funds can also be received based on a type of rate per truck. The paperwork is in the process of being completed.
Halloween parade
Botkin said the Halloween parade, which will start at the borough building and end at the fire company, is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Trick-or-treat night is 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Oct. 31. Borough residents are asked to turn on a porch light if trick-or-treaters are welcome.
