Candidate hosting dinner today
KULPMONT - Stephen Bridy, Elysburg, an independent candidate for Northumberland County commissioner, is hosting a free dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the American Legion pavilion.
As of Friday afternoon, there were about 50 seats available. It's recommended to call in advance at 274-7676 to see if seating remains.
Bridy said he's having the event in an effort to meet voters, but that it is not a fundraiser. Still, donations are welcome to cover the cost of the food, which he said is being catered by Mattucci's Willow Street Cafe.
Pesticide clinic scheduled
SUNBURY - Northumberland County Master Gardeners will host a pesticide clinic, starting at 10 a.m. today at Schwalm's Greenhouse, 10131 Route 147, Sunbury.
Visitors can come learn how to use, store and discard pesticides, answer a question on the Wheel of Fortune and win a prize, learn how to control insect pests without the use of pesticides, visit the look-a-like booth and get Mr. Yuk labels for home use and learn the proper personal protective equipment needed when applying pesticides. There will be prizes for every age.
GED test planned for October
MONTANDON - The General Educational Development (GED®) Test, which enables adults to earn a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma, will be given in October 2011 at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) main office near Montandon.
The GED® exam is made up of five parts: English/writing skills, reading, social studies, science and mathematics. Persons taking the test must be 18 years of age and must have withdrawn from school.
It is recommended that applicants attend a free GED screening at one of the sites (in Bloomsburg, Lewisburg, Milton, Shamokin or Sunbury) to determine test readiness. Instructions are available for registering online for the GED test.
Before you can take the GED test, you must attend one of three orientation sessions at the CSIU on Monday, Oct. 3. To be scheduled for an orientation session: Call the CSIU weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 523-1155, extension 2327; go to www.GED123.org and print both registration forms; purchase a money order ($65 for complete test, $15 for single test) and make it out to "CSIU," and mail registration forms and money order to: CSIU/GED, PO Box 213, Lewisburg, PA 17837
You must bring a government photo identification and a second proof of address to the orientation sessiond proof of address. On test day, you must bring government photo identification to take the test.
Anyone who passes the test is entitled to a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Scores will be made available online to students at www.GED123.org.
