MOUNT CARMEL - Four members of the Mount Carmel Lions Club picked up litter from along two miles of Route 61 Thursday night.
"You would be surprised how much household garbage is thrown along the highway," said David Berezovske, chairman of the club's highway cleanup committee.
The cleanup occurs twice a year, the fourth Thursdays in May and September.
In past years, the club picked up litter on the Merrian Mountain south of the borough, but since taking charge of Wightman's Dam, club members have decided to clean along Route 61 from the borough line to the dam, which is a short distance from Centralia. They've cleaned this stretch of road for the past two years.
Typical collection is 20 or more bags of trash - anything from food, diapers, cardboard and cans to political posters, tires and other car parts.
Club President Kerri Kondisko noted the need for help for these and other project.
"The Lions Club is always looking for community-minded individuals to become members," she said.
