One candidate withdraws petition

SUNBURY - The deadline for candidates who filed nomination petitions to withdraw from the campaign is Wednesday, March 23.

As of mid-day Tuesday, the Northumberland County Board of Elections received only one candidate withdrawal notice, that of James Orner, a Democrat who filed a petition for Northumberland Borough Council.

Shamokin Area progress reports

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin Area Middle/High School will distribute progress reports to students on Friday. All students in grades 7 to 12 will receive a progress report to update parents with their child's academic status.

TIES program today at MCA, Shamokin

MOUNT CARMEL - This week marks the beginning of standardized assessment tests in schools across the state.

Students in grades 9 and 10 are not required to take the tests, but the Mount Carmel Area and Shamokin Area after-school program TIES (Teens in Innovative Educational Structures) will host a leadership program for freshmen and sophomores at the schools today.

The program, which will be presented by Harriet Turk, a nationally known motivational speaker, will be held in the auditorium at Mount Carmel Area Junior-Senior High School at 9 a.m. and Shamokin Area Middle/High School auditorium at 1 p.m.

TIES is a free after-school program that connects students' interests to new learning experiences, including culinary arts, engineering and the arts. A 21st Century Community Learning Center grant program, TIES is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and administered by the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU).

Gospel program to be presented

SHAMOKIN - Seventh Street Primitive Methodist Church, 34 N. Seventh St., will present a sacred concert from Larry Ahlborn, at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Ahlborn has performed at the Grand Old Opry, the Hawaiian Islands and throughout the United States. The concert will feature piano and vocal gospel music.

A free-will offering will be received that night.

Sweeper coming to Kulpmont Friday

KULPMONT - PennDOT will be sweeping Chestnut Street in Kulpmont from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. During that time, there will be no parking on Chestnut Street. Violators will be ticketed.
