COAL TOWNSHIP - Stop signs will be erected at three different intersections in Coal Township for safety reasons.
During a meeting Thursday night, Coal Township Commissioners Gene Welsh, Gerard Waugh, George Zalar and Craig Fetterman agreed to advertise an ordinance that will establish stop signs at the intersections of Church and Harvey streets, Clay and Hunter streets, and Oak and State streets. Commissioner Paul Petrovich was unable to attend the session.
In response to a story in Thursday's News-Item featuring 28 citations filed by Code Enforcement Officer Chris Petrovich against the owners of nine blighted properties in the township this year, Fetterman stated, "We are taking a serious stance on blighted properties and we're just starting."
The commissioners approved the sale of a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria police car and its annual $10,000 donation to the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library.
The board granted permission to Maine Fire Company to hold its annual block party from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20.
