KULPMONT - Mayor Myron Turlis heard a lot of noise over the Fourth of July weekend - mostly complaints.

At Tuesday night's borough council meeting, Turlis spoke about the number of calls he received concerning bottle rockets.

"In past years, I got maybe two or three calls. This year it was 15," he said.

Most of the grievances were about the fireworks being aimed at homes.

"In light of the Mount Carmel fire when a bottle rocket caused significant damage, maybe we need to look at our ordinance again," Turlis said.

The matter will be turned over to the borough's ordinance committee for review, said council president Bruno Varano.

Kulpmont top 3

At the start of the meeting, council honored Mount Carmel Area 2011 valedictorian Christine Mrozek, salutatorian Kelsey Kraynak and third-ranked Brigid Demko, all Kulpmont residents.

"I don't think it's ever happened before that Kulpmont residents earned the top three places in the class," Turlis said. "With all your hard work, you can be proud role models for this community."

They were each presented resolutions from the council and proclamations from the mayor's office.

New ordinance starts

Code enforcement officer John Timm reported the borough's rental property ordinance will be enforced starting Wednesday, July 13.

The ordinance states that every landlord must apply with the borough office for a permit to rent properties within 60 days of the new enforcement date, along with a registration fee of $100, which will approve the permit until Dec. 31, 2012. A copy of the ordinance can be found at www.boroughofkulpmont.org.

Grants committee chairman Clarence Deitrick said Kulpmont received a $5,000 grant from the Degenstein Foundation to purchase equipment for a new playground planned for the Terry-Miriello Stadium. Council also moved to allow officials to sign for a $40,000 grant if approved by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
