Changes to Mass will be explained

MOUNT CARMEL - Seminarian Kevin Kayda will explain the Catholic Church's changes to Mass in a one-hour meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church hall, 47 S. Market St. The public is invited.

Dangers of 'meth' focus of meeting

MOUNT CARMEL - A presentation on the dangers of methamphetamine use will be the focus of this month's meeting of Friends and Family Concerned About the Abuse of Drugs (FFCAAD) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church hall, 47 S. Market St.

CSO to hold diaper drive

SHAMOKIN - Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc. is holding a Diaper Drive to benefit the Pregnancy Care Center of Shamokin. Operation Dry Bottoms will run until Aug. 9 and will be accepting donations of diapers and wipes as well as monetary donations to purchase these items. Please feel free to contact the office with any questions and drop box locations.

The Pregnancy Care Center is located at 35 S. 2nd St. The center has an "Earn while you Learn" program where expecting parents can take part in educational opportunities and, in return, they can choose items from the Center's store. They may choose from clothing, hygiene items, baby furniture, diapers, wipes and more. The most crucial need at this time is diapers and wipes. All babies deserve to have their basic needs met, Operation Dry Bottoms will do it's best to help make that happen for the children in the community.

Mount Carmel Food Pantry

MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Food Pantry Distribution will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Notary Shop, Oak Street. The new fiscal year started on July 1 and all participants must re-registered for the coming year.

Pioneer Day marks 49th anniversary

ASHLAND - Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train in Ashland will hold its 19th annual "Pioneer Day" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in celebration of the 49th anniversary of the tourist attraction.

In addition to its regular coal mine tours and steam train rides, a variety of special events will be held in Higher Up Park, which is adjacent to the tunnel. The Higher Ups Park offers plenty of picnic tables and a beautiful enclosed pavilion which is used by reservation for family reunions, parties and school groups. There will be entertainment, local vendors and organizations selling all types of food, and a large craft fair.
