KULPMONT - The Kulpmont American Legion held its monthly meeting on Feb. 22. Chaplain Jackie Butler said the opening prayer, and president Joan Schaschezk opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble. The roll call of officers was taken, and all were present.

Chairperson Betty Chapman gave her report on the Americanism Essays written by Lourdes fifth- and sixth- grade students. The reports were read by a committee of five members, which were Chapman, Joan Schaschezk, Jackie Butler, Charlotte Seilecki and Renee Redd.

Winners from fifth grade were Selene Albert, first place, and Patrick Latshaw, second place. The sixth-grade winner was Shane Gatsby. The winners will receive a monetary gift while all the other entries will receive a treat. The auxiliary thanks all those who entered.

Poppy Days were discussed and the event will be held April 30 and May 1 at Holy Angels Church, Kulpmont. Volunteers for the church are Rosalie Ziegler, Schaschezk and Redd. Poppies will also be sold at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter on April 16 and May 22. Volunteers for the April 16 sale are Dolly Homiak, Chapman, Flo Willard, Reggie Poplaloskie and Arlene Terry. Anyone wishing to volunteer may sign up on a sheet at the Legion.

Auxiliary dues will remain the same for 2011. Chapman won the jug, which she donated back to the auxiliary. Butler closed the meeting with the closing prayer. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29. All members are welcome to attend.
