Reading program starts June 28
SHAMOKIN - The Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library will present its summer reading program beginning Tuesday, June 28. The program, held each Tuesday, will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue on July 5, 12 and 19 and Aug. 2.
The theme for this year's program is "One world, many stories." All children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Programs include stories, crafts and snacks. The reading program will begin with a geography magic show, presented by magician Joseph Keppel.
On July 19, John Andrews will present "Summer Fun Family Magic Show." Fingerprinting and dogs in police work are also on the schedule. Guest presenters are sponsored by the Shamokin Area Education Association.
A concurrent summer reading program will be held for children with advanced reading skills. Participants will receive suggested reading titles in a folder which will be stamped for each book read.

Lecture on WWII Italian campaign
BOALSBURG - Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Jim Bloom will present a lecture, "Soft Underbelly; the Italian Campaign of World War II," at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.
Bloom begins the discussion with earlier events in France and North Africa that influenced the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy, then provides a brief overview of the two-year campaign in southern Europe. Anecdotes of Army and Navy operations are presented, as well as photographs from key battlefields.

Swimming pool open
MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Swimming Pool, 400 N. Market St., will be open daily from noon to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Admission is $3. Adult season passes cost $60, child passes cost $50 and family passes (up to four members) are available for $150, with $15 added for each additional family member.
