SAES science fair winners announced

COAL TOWNSHIP - Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students at Shamokin Area Elementary School participated in the school's annual science fair. The winning exhibits were those that received the most points in the following categories: creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, clarity and dramatic value.

The 2011 Shamokin Area Elementary School grand-prize winning exhibit was "Stick to the Best," submitted by sixth grader Aleea Faus.

First-place winners were Joan Shaffer, grade 4; Madison Primerano, grade 5, and Desiree Lohoon, grade 6.

Second-place winners were Abigail Thew, grade 4; Cameron Scandle, grade 5, and Skylar Hoffman, grade 6.

Third-place winners were Emily Backes, grade 4; Justin Leiby, grade 5, and Annie Richardson, grade 6.

Fourth-place winners were Nick Feudale and Hanna Halderman, grade 4; George Zalar, grade 5, and Kirsten Hynoski and Seth Herb, grade 6.

Fifth-place winners were Marshall Buggy and Lake Roadarmel, grade 4; Taylor Cullen and Marissa Erdman, grade 5, and Alicia Kapushinski, grade 6.

Prizes were supplied by Weis Markets, Palmer's Diner, Coney Island, Mount Carmel Sports Academy, Taj Mahair, Knoebels Amusement Resort, Dunkin' Donuts, Sciccitano's Pizza and OIP.

Each participant received a ribbon, certificate, free food coupons, a ticket for a random prize and extra credit in their school subjects.

Sixth-grade teachers E.J. Bailey and Douglas Kase were co-chairmen. PTA helpers included Jen and Steve Carpenter.

The judges were James Zack, Victor Colangelo, Stephen Major, Donna Talisesky, Ashley Talisesky and Bill Faust.

First-place and grand-prize projects were on display at the elementary school for two weeks after the fair.
