Local armed services activities for Memorial Day weekend:
Shamokin/Coal Township
The annual memorial march will begin at 9 a.m. at the playground at Arch and Locust Streets, then stop at the Timothy Diorio Memorial in Coal Township, the Cpl. David Witmer memorial in Shamokin, ending at the Veterans Price for Freedom Monument on Lincoln Street for a special service.
Kulpmont
Activities begin at 9 a.m. when attendees will make a motorcoach tour of several cemeteries for graveside and memorial services. The annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance service will start at 11 a.m. at Ninth and Ash streets, proceeding to Roosevelt Court where a ceremony will be held.
Elysburg
A Memorial Day mass will be held at 10 a.m. at All Saints Cemetery. The public is invited.
Mount Carmel
Observances begin at 10 a.m. Saturday as volunteers place flags at the graves of deceased veterans. The annual memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Divine Redeemer Church.
Memorial Day activities begin at 8:15 a.m. Monday at the memorial at the American Legion at Avenue and Maple Street. From there, attendees will march to the memorials at Susquehanna Bank, Second and Oak Street, then to Third and Oak for services at the World War I plaque at Union National Bank, followed by services at St. Mary's Cemetery, Mount Carmel Cemetery and St. Joseph's Cemetery in Locust Gap.
Centralia/Wilburton
Members will assemble at the post home at 8 a.m. Monday. At 9:30 a.m. those gathered will meet at Zion Methodist Church, Aristes, and travel to cemeteries. Following that, the rifle squad will meet back at the post home for TAPS for post members, awards from state Rep. Kurt Masser, followed by food and refreshments.
Ashland
The borough's Memorial Day parade will kick off at 11 a.m. Monday at 2100 Centre Street and march down to the Mother's Memorial, where a brief service will be held with guest speaker Tom Dando.
Mandata
The Alvin E. Long American Legion Post 504 in Mandata will hold its Memorial Day services starting at 11 a.m. at the pavilion. The guest speaker will be state Rep. Lynda Schlegel-Culver. All those in attenance are then invited to a Memorial Day picnic with the band "Smooth Country" entertaining from 2 to 5 p.m.
