Paving scheduled in Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL - The 100 block of Clay Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Wednesday for paving.

SASD announces end-of-year activities

COAL TOWNSHIP - The baccalaureate program for the Shamokin Area Middle/High School Class of 2011 will be held in the high school auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 6.

The scholastic awards program will be held in the high school auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.

The middle/high school will distribute report cards to students on Thursday, June 9.

Commencement exercises are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in the high school auditorium. Tickets are required for admission prior to 6:30 p.m.

Local man promoted in state police

HARRISBURG - State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan has promoted Marshall A. Martin, 46, of Selinsgrove, Snyder County, to major and assigned him as director of the state police legislative affairs office. He most recently served as director of the department's risk management office.

A native of Mahanoy City, Martin enlisted in the state police in 1988. Following his training at the State Police Academy in Hershey, he was assigned to Troop F, Selinsgrove.

As he progressed through the ranks, Martin also served at stations in Stonington, Montoursville and Blooming Grove and with the Bureau of Professional Responsibility and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He was promoted to corporal in 1993, to sergeant in 1995, to lieutenant in 2004 and to captain in 2008.

Martin received a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University in 1986. He also is a 2008 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.

Martin is married to the former Kathleen Skotek, a native of McAdoo, Schuylkill County. They have three children: Kaitlin, 22; Casey, 19, and Angelo, 14.

Memorial Day Mass

ELYSBURG - Mass will be celebrated at All Saints Cemetery at 10 a.m. Memorial Day, weather permitting. Feel free to bring a lawn chair.
