KULPMONT - One of the candidates last year for state legislator is now running for Northumberland County commissioner.

Myron F. Turlis, self-employed business owner, announced his candidacy Tuesday.

A life-long resident of Northumberland County and a graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School, Turlis serves as mayor of Kulpmont Borough and is also on the board of the Kulpmont-Marion Heights Joint Municipal Authority.

He and wife Linda reside in Kulpmont. They have a son, Brian, and a grandson, Austin.

"I have been in business for 26 years as owner of Turlis Sewer and Drain Cleaning. By owning my own business, it has allowed me to understand how to deal with people and businesses both large and small. Which in turn, has helped me to understand what needs to be done to help all county residents and businesses move forward."

Turlis said Northumberland County is going to be facing many challenges in the near future. Many county programs may face financial cut backs, or possible elimination due to state and federal budget cuts.

"If elected commissioner, I promise to work tirelessly with the other commissioners along with all county offices to do what is in the best interest of Northumberland County," Turlis said. "As commissioner, I will strive to have a close working relationship with all county employees. This is extremely important as Northumberland County can only be as good as its employees."

He also promises to bring more transparency to county government. On occasion, Turlis says he prefers to have commissioners meetings held during evening hours, or held in different parts of the county, giving county residents a chance to participate and have a voice in government. As county commissioners, he said they must never lose sight of that purpose, or the people they are serving.

"Northumberland County is a great place to live, work and raise a family. If elected, I promise hard work, honesty and integrity," Turlis said. "Anyone who would like to get to know me a little better, or would like to meet with me, please call 373-3239. You can also email me at mturlis@verizon.net. Together, we can work towards a better government for the people of Northumberland County."
