HERNDON - Members of borough council discussed options for opening bank accounts to fund projects for the local playground at their meeting April 2.

On that subject, two new members of council are doing excellent work for the community, secretary Ann Botkin shared after Monday's meeting, referencing Alexis Schaffner and Judi Deppen.

Schaffner had given a presentation to council in February pertaining to a $40,000 state grant - which has since been applied for, earlier this month - for the playground. If approved (the borough should know by fall), a four-year, four-phase project will start. Three of the phases will be funded through the grant.

Phase 1, which the borough plans to fund and start this spring, addresses the auxiliary court immediately next to the playground. Plans are to rip up the breaking macadam and plant grass. Phase 2, to be done next year if the grant is approved, will address the main playground, while phase three will address the pavilion. Phase 4 will address the basketball and tennis courts.

Anticipated changes include handicapped parking and connecting sidewalks, flower boxes and trees.

Architectural designs have been submitted and are under review by the state.

Matching funds are being sought; those wishing to help or contribute can contact the borough office.

"We are trying to go green here, which will help the environment as well as our community," Botkin said.

Meanwhile, Deppen is serving as a liaison with the Lions Club, which is pursuing refurbishment of the borough's World War II memorial. It was previously attached to the old Herndon Fire House, which served as the borough building until it was razed about 10 years ago. It has been in storage since.

The Lions Club is hoping to find land for a memorial park where the memorial would once again be erected.
