ELYSBURG - Ralpho Township Police warn area residents to be aware of telephone scams.
Police were recently contacted by an area resident who had received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild involved in a traffic accident.
The caller said he sustained injuries in the alleged crash, had been jailed and needed bail money.
A second person got on the phone and pretended to be a public defense attorney representing the imposter in an attempt to add validity to the call.
The targeted individual was told to wire money through Western Union and was also given a list of instructions on how to answer questions posed by representatives of the bank or Western Union.
The target did not send the money and instead contacted police.
Call police
Anyone who receives a suspicious telephone call that fits the profile of a phone scam is urged to contact local police to assist in checking the validity of the calls before sending any money to anyone, Ralpho Township Police said.
