MOUNT CARMEL - Eric Belfanti has resigned as a member of Mount Carmel Area School Board for personal reasons.
Belfanti's resignation became effective Thursday when the board approved it during a meeting that was rescheduled from April 21.
Voting to accept the resignation were Directors Rose Marquardt, Donna James, Dr. Raymond Kraynak, Judy McCollum, Michael Rovito and Charlie Mannello. Belfanti, Robert Muldowney and Nicholas Goretski III were absent.
The board agreed to accept applications for the next two weeks for Belfanti's position and has 30 days to appoint a new director. If directors fail to make an appointment within 30 days, Northumberland County President Judge Robert B. Sacavage will select the new board member.
Whoever is appointed to Belfanti's seat will complete his four-year term, which expires at the end of the year. His successor must seek election next year.
In other business, the board tabled a motion to eliminate the district's pre-kindergarten program due to lack of funding from the state. Board members deferred making a decision on the pre-kindergarten program because all the directors were not present at the meeting.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 12.
