SHAMOKIN - More than $1 million in local, school and county taxes went unpaid in Shamokin in 2011.
Delinquent personal and property taxes totaling $1,180,449.17 remains owed to Shamokin, Shamokin Area School District and Northumberland County, according to year-end calculations by city Treasurer Brenda Scandle.
Those taxes are owed by city residents, city property owners and people employed within city limits who failed to pay property, occupational and per capita taxes.
There were 4,069 property tax bills issued by the city on behalf of Shamokin and Northumberland County in 2011, of which 76 percent were collected, down from 82 percent in 2010.
Property taxes unpaid to the city and county total $286,305.77 and $119,742.84, respectively.
For the school district, 4,125 property tax bills were issued by the city, of which 75 percent were collected in 2011 while $152,512.56 were left unpaid, according to Scandle.
The city turned over $282,616.32 in delinquent property taxes for 2010, said Jan Nestico, director of county tax claims. Of that, she said $194,764.89, or about 69 percent, remains outstanding.
Those figures do not include the 2010 delinquent property taxes unpaid to the county or school district.
Shamokin's collection rate in 2011 for personal taxes owed to the city and county is actually up 2 percent compared to 2010, but that's tempered by the total amount collected - just 49 percent.
The treasurer's office issued 6,082 bills for personal taxes due to the city and county, of which 2,980 were paid by year's end. The remaining 51 percent, or 3,101, left unpaid totals $216,571, according to Scandle.
Personal tax bills issued by the city for the school district totaled 5,862, of which 44 percent were paid and $405,317 was left delinquent.
Delinquent property taxes will be turned over to Northumberland County Tax Claims Bureau for collection, while delinquent personal taxes will be given to the individual taxing body's privately contracted collector.
