A car crashed into a home on Upper Road in East Cameron Township and then ignited, causing severe damage to the home after the flames spread.

First for county commissioners in election
The race for Northumberland County Commissioner produced two firsts: no party will have a majority on the board, and Stephen Bridy, an independent candidate, won the third seat on the board, finishing behind Republican candidate Rick Shoch and Democratic incumbent Vinny Clausi. Commissioners Frank Sawicki and Merle Phillips lost their bids for re-election in the race.

LM teacher treated for acid burns
A teacher at Line Mountain High School was treated for burns after the bottom fell out of a container of hydrochloric acid, landing on her feet and the floor, causing a hazardous material team to be called in and the school to be evacuated.

Raid for synthetic drugs in Ranshaw
Coal Township Police officers raided the Mount Royal Mini-Mart in Ranshaw on the suspicion that the store sold synthetic drugs. No charges were filed the day of the raid, but officials say several items were taken for analysis.
Tax hike coming to Coal Township
Facing a deficit of $190,000, Coal Township Commissioners announced plans to raise taxes to make up one-third of the deficit, with the rest coming from the township's reserve fund.

A Northumberland man who barricaded himself inside his residence, kept police at bay for eight hours, forcing a tactical team to be deployed to help alleviate the situation.

Drivers flown after rollover crashes
Two rollover accidents, one in Catawissa R.R. and the other near the Cameron Bridge in Coal Township, required the drivers to be flown via helicopter for treatment.

100 arrested in largest area drug bust
In the largest drug enforcement effort in county history, approximately 100 defendants were apprehended by the Northumberland-Montour Drug Task Force, many of them charged with selling controlled substances like prescription medication, bath salts and heroin.

Man charged after threatening probation officers
A Coal Township man was charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly threatened three probation officers with a shotgun who arrived at his home looking for information on a person of interest.

Sparks fly between commissioners
In their first meeting since election day, Northumbeland County Commissioner-elect Stephen Bridy claimed that Commissioner Vinny Clausi used vulgar language toward him and threatened to fire 11 employees while ordering him out of his office during an informal meeting between the new board of commissioners.

Southern Columbia Area won the 20th District 4-A championship in 21 years, while Shamokin won its first District 4-AAA title in eight years with a 21-20 win over Milton, scoring the final touchdown in last minute of the game.

Mill owner dies after machine accident
The owner of the Shamrock Mills feed mill was critically injured when his sweatshirt got caught in the machinery. He passed away after being taken off of life support two days later.

Wise enters guilty plea in murder
Westley Wise, the suspect in a murder trial for stabbing his girlfriend in Danville, switched his plea in Montour County Court to guilty of third-degree murder. He now faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

It was announced that Jeep Jamboree USA will bring one of its off-road riding events to the proposed site of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area in Northumberland County.

Best lawsuit thrown out, then refiled
A U.S. District Court judge threw out the wrongful termination and defamation lawsuit filed by former Northumberland County chief clerk and assistant solicitor Kymberley Best against the county and commissioners Vinny Clausi and Merle Phillips due to a lack of sufficient facts, but gave her 20 days to amend the complaint to provide the factual allegations. She then filed a new complaint.
