Act 80 day set for Thursday
COAL TOWNSHIP - Thursday will be an Act 80 Day early dismissal for Shamokin Area School District students.
Elementary students will be dismissed at 12:45 p.m., while middle/high school students will be dismissed at 12:18 p.m. K-4 afternoon students will have classes.
Schools will be closed Friday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 2, for Christmas vacation and will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 3.
Train display winners
LEWISBURG - More than 1,300 people visited the holiday train display at the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau in Lewisburg from Friday through Monday.
There were drawings for two model train giveaways, won by Jared Geise, of Sunbury, and Curtis Zimmerman, of Pennsdale.
The train sets were sponsored by the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau, Loose Ties Model Railroad Club, English Model Train Supply and T & J Train Junctions.
Employees make record donation
DANVILLE - Employees of Geisinger Health System donated nearly $380,000 to the United Way during the health system's annual employee campaign.
Geisinger's 2011 United Way campaign set new records for total donations, concluding with employee contributions of $379,754.50 to 16 different United Way organizations falling within Geisinger's service area. This total far exceeded the campaign's goal of $250,000, and the previous record of $317,002 set last year.
In addition, Geisinger Health System made two $100,000 contributions to the United Way to be distributed to the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, bringing Geisinger's total contribution to the United Way to $579,754.50.
Mass changed at Our Lady
MOUNT CARMEL - Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 47 S. Market St., will only have a 9:30 a.m. Mass on Christmas morning, but will have a 4 p.m. Mass, an 8 p.m. Mass and a midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
