Roving DUI memorial in Stonington

STONINGTON - The DUI Victims Moving Memorial will be at the Pennsylvania State Police station in Stonington, Route 61, for an event today regarding awareness of impaired driving and underage drinking.

During 2010 Christmas and New Year holidays, there were a combined 2,035 crashes and 19 fatalities due to impaired driving, according to a release from state police.

The memorial was developed by the Pennsulvania DUI Association. It is housed in a 30-foot trailer featuring a hand-painted garden scene and a 25-foot wall printed with 1,000 names of DUI victims.

The moving memorial replicates an outdoor setting in tribute to the DUI Victims Memorial Garden in Harrisburg.

Hunting license requirements to change

HARRISBURG - State hunters and trappers will no longer be required to display their licenses on an outer garment beginning Feb. 13.

Gov. Tom Corbett signed a bill into law Thursday that repealed the requirement. The repeal began with a state House bill approved in June and subsequent approval by the Senate.

Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe applauded the enactment of legislation.

"Since 2003, the game commission has been supporting various drafts of legislation ... to remove this antiquated requirement," Roe said. "With today's new license format, this change in law will make hunting less complicated, improve license management by hunters and trappers, and limit the inconveniences and troubles associated with lost or misplaced licenses.

"While we are pleased with the change in law, it is important to remember that the new law doesn't take effect for 60 days," he said. "So, hunters and trappers will need to continue to wear their licenses on an outer garment until Feb. 13."
