No other school in Pennsylvania approaches Southern Columbia relating to its history in the PIAA State Football Championships.

The Tigers have been to the finals 12 times - their 13th visit will be Friday against Clairton - while no other team approaches double digits in finals appearances.

And while the road has been bumpy at times with six losses, Southern also holds a state record five-year victory streak, claiming championships in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Following is a look back, both the wins and the losses, from the Tigers' 12 previous trips to the state championships.

1994 Southern Columbia 49, Western Beaver 6

The Tigers first trip to the state final - this one at Altoona's Mansion Park Stadium - was a rousing success.

Butch Romanoski ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, Nate Roadarmel and Ricco Rosini ran for two touchdowns each and Brad Osevala completed three passes, all to Ardie Kissinger, for 166 yards and a touchdown as Southern completed a 15-0 season.

1995 Farrell 6, Southern Columbia 0

The Steelers' Stan Kennedy scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter and the Farrell defense did the rest, holding the Tigers to only 169 total yards and no points.

1996 Farrell 14, Southern Columbia 12

With Tigers' standout running back Ricco Rosini sidelined with an injury, the Steelers earned their second consecutive state final victory over the Tigers. For Southern, Bob Yancoskie caught a touchdown pass from Nick Slater, and Scott Bloom ran for a score.

1998 Rochester 18, Southern Columbia 0

In the first of five finals meetings between the Rams and Tigers, the Rochester defense was the story of the game, limiting the usually-potent Southern ground attack to less than 100 yards.

1999 South Side Beaver 27, Southern Columbia 21

South Side Beaver led 21-7 in the third quarter, but the Tigers scored two straight touchdowns to tie the score at 21. SSB fullback Cory Boyd scored the deciding touchdown on a 3-yard run with 9 seconds remaining.

2000 Rochester 22, Southern Columbia 14

The Rams get the best of the Tigers for the second time when Southern commits five turnovers to offset a 317-274 total yardage advantage. Nate Richard and Matt Kaskie scored a touchdown each for the Tigers.

2001 Rochester 16, Southern Columbia 0

For the second time, the Rams' defense shut down a powerful Tigers' offense. It was, however, the end of the Tigers' 6-game finals losing streak. Things were about to get better in a big way.

2002 Southern Columbia 31, Rochester 6

Southern's second state title, this one in Hershey, is a sweet one with the Tigers mauling old nemesis Rochester. Senior quarterback Mark Wojtowicz passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Matt Murdock and Kale Roth each caught a touchdown pass, and Ryan Slater ran for a score.

2003 Southern Columbia 49, Bishop Carroll 20

Neither Bishop Carroll's defenser, nor a snowy Hersheypark Stadium could do anything to slow down the red-hot Tigers as they won their second consecutive PIAA crown.

Southern Columbia pounded out 402 yards on the ground, including 185 and three touchdowns from halfback Brandon Traugh.

2004 Southern Columbia 35, Rochester 0

This time, the Tigers extracted a big more revenge on the Rams, shutting them out while senior quarterback Dan Latorre ran for 150 yards and four touchdowns in his final game in a Southern uniform.

2005 Southern Columbia 50, Duquesne 19

Fullback Henry Hynoski put his stamp on Southern's fourth straight state championship, rushing for 271 yards and four touchdowns.

2006 Southern Columbia 56, West Middlesex 14

The Tigers won their fifth straight - sixth overall - title with six different players scoring touchdowns. They had 28 points by the end of the first quarter, and 42 by the half. Henry Hynoski ran only 11 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Ted Heitzman completed four passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
