SHAMOKIN - Two drivers escaped serious injury Friday morning when a car pulling out from Weis Markets struck another vehicle before crashing into a brick front porch of a home at the corner of Walnut and Sixth streets.

Shamokin Patrolman William Zalinski reported Charlie Wayne, 75, of 208 S. Coal St., Shamokin, was pulling his Buick Century out of the Weis Markets parking lot onto Sixth Street at 9:40 a.m. when his auto struck a 1993 Toyota driven south on Sixth Street by Lester Yohe, 37, of 1191 Trevorton Road, Coal Township, who was approaching the stop sign at the intersection with Walnut Street.

After colliding with Yohe's vehicle, Wayne said he accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing his auto to crash into the brick front porch at the home of Jerome Odorizzi, of 247 W. Walnut St., Shamokin.

Odorizzi's porch sustained extensive damage as several sections of the brick were knocked loose in the accident.

Wayne experienced pain in his ribs and was treated at the scene by medical personnel from AREA Services Ambulance. He did not require hospitalization. Yohe escaped injury.

Wayne's car sustained extensive front-end damage and was towed from the scene by Anthracite Towing. Yohe's vehicle sustained moderate damage to its right front end and also was towed by Anthracite Towing.

Also assisting at the scene were Shamokin Patrolman William Miner, city firefighters, fire police, and Shamokin Emergency Squad personnel.

Zalinski said the accident remains under investigation.
