COAL TOWNSHIP - Donna James was unanimously elected chairperson of the Northumberland County Career and Technology Center Operating Agency Wednesday night during the board's annual reorganization meeting.

James represents Mount Carmel Area School District on the operating agency.

Newly-elected Shamokin Area School Board Directors Charles Shuey and Ronald McElwee were named vice chairman and secretary, respectively.

James and Shuey will serve one-year terms, while McElwee will fill an unexpired term that ends June 30, 2012, at a pro-rated salary of $2,700.

The board agreed to conduct its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Next year's reorganization will be held Dec. 12.

Other board members in attendance were Michael Rovito of Mount Carmel Area School District, outgoing chairman Dennis Erdman and Scott Bartholomew of Line Mountain School District, and Brian Persing of Shamokin Area School District.

During the agency's regular meeting, directors approved a budget transfer of $3,800 from the computer assisted drafting account to the protective services account for equipment upgrades, implementation of emergency medical technician certification and instruction supplies.

Board members agreed to submit the strategic plan of academic standards and assessment midpoint review from 2009 through 2014.

Directors waived the usage fee for the school's cafetorium for the Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging - Aging and Disability Resources (Link Program) for a cross-training program kickoff on Dec. 16. All food expenses at the program will be incurred by the Area Agency on Aging.

Recently-hired administrative director James F. Monaghan welcomed board members and invited them to take a tour of the school. He said the school will host a Christmas breakfast program Dec. 14.

"I'm excited about a lot of things happening at the school and I look forward to working with everyone," Monaghan said.

The new administrative director, who was hired in August, has 30 years of experience in education. He has served as a teacher, program coordinator, assistant director, director, special education supervisor and principal at Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 at the Maple Avenue Campus in Mar-Lin.

The 53-year-old Lost Creek native currently resides in Ringtown.

After the meeting, Monaghan said he plans to implement adult evening programs at the school involving hobby courses, trade-related courses and training classes.
