Crash closes part of Rt. 61

SHAMOKIN - One person was taken to a local hospital for treatment after a four-vehicle accident tied up traffic on one of Shamokin's busiest streets Thursday afternoon.

Shamokin City Police declined naming the drivers, saying the accident is still under investigation.

City Police Cpl. Darvin Tobias said there is a possibility a red light was disregarded in the crash, but gave no more information. He said the accident will be investigated by Patrolman Jarrod Scandle.

A man who saw the accident said a Chevrolet Equinox was driving down Shamokin Street from Bunker Hill, entered the intersection with Sunbury Street (Route 61) and hit the side of a Ford Fusion.

"It all happened so quick, she just came down the hill and hit the Fusion," said witness Eric Bunch. "I hope everyone is OK."

The Equinox spun down Sunbury Street toward Rock Street. Two other vehicles, a Ford Expedition and a Nissan Sentra, were damaged in the crash.

Lisa Prentiss also witnessed the accident.

"I was just getting ready to turn on Shamokin Street when it all happened," she said. "You see something like that and it just shakes you up."

The driver of the Fusion was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries; no one else was injured. All four vehicles were towed from the scene.

Police shut down Sunbury Street for approximately an hour.

Assisting police at the scene were members of Liberty Fire Company and Shamokin Rescue 62.
