SHAMOKIN - Local residents who fell victim to the Flood of 2011 were assisted last weekend by 32 volunteers from Maryland.
The volunteers helped residents of Sunbury, Chestnut, Rock, Vine and Franklin streets clean flood debris from their basements and spray for mold.
CSO, A Community Action Agency, is the lead agency organizing disaster relief efforts locally.
United Methodist Committee on Disaster Relief recruited the 32 volunteers from Maryland to help assist local residents. St. John's United Methodist Church, 1218 W. Arch St., Coal Township, housed the volunteers Thursday and Friday evenings.
Local volunteers, members of Mountainside Assembly of God Church, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and others acting individually, helped in the cleanup effort.
Food was provided for the volunteers, donated by Our Lady of Hope Church, Shepherd's Table, Northumberland County Career and Technical School, Doogie's Pizza, Anthony's Italian Restaurant and Pizza Hut.
CSO is in the process of organizing a long-term disaster recovery group to assist Northumberland County residents.
Volunteers are needed for outreach activities and to assist with flood cleanup. CSO also accepts donations for building and cleaning supplies, equipment such as power washers, monetary donations, food and more.
Those who need assistance, or know of those who need help, are asked to contact CSO at 644-6575.
