Barry B. Rebuck, a member of the Committee for Quality Education, is seeking re-election to the Shamokin Area School Board.

During his first term, Rebuck said he actively served as chairman of the board (2010), and vice chair (2009) for the Northumberland County Career and Technology Center. It was during this time that HVAC and CAD and drafting courses were added to the curriculum.

He also served as buildings and grounds chairman (2008-2011). He worked with facilities staff regarding lighting and painting projects, ceiling replacements and erosion control for the elementary and high schools.

One project in particular that is saving money for the district is the Bright Lights, Big Savings initiative, Rebuck said. This project alone is projected to save about $72,000 annually. By switching many light fixtures around campus to energy efficient ones, usage has declined 48 percent, which translates into an average of $5,000 in monthly energy savings, he said.

Rebuck said he is a community-minded individual, spending years working with area youth as a wrestling coach at the Shamokin elementary and junior high school.

He is employed as director of plant services for Shamokin Area Community Hospital since 2003, where he has overseen numerous large-scale, multimillion-dollar construction projects, which include Vision 2005: the West Wing project, the renovation and expansion of four major clinical areas, the information technology suite, the main entrance, the Women's Health Center and MRI suite, among others.

His managerial duties include the supervision of the maintenance, housekeeping, facility and bio-medical engineering staffs, and he said he is known for his easy-going demeanor and ability to work well with others.

As a member the of the hospital's safety and emergency preparedness committees, the latter winning a state award from the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, Rebuck said he works extensively with the emergency services nurse manager to maintain the most current protocols for emergency hospital procedures and policies.

Before joining the hospital, he worked for Skanska USA Building Inc. for six years, where he oversaw major renovations at Lewistown Hospital and construction of the Lower Paxton Township Friendship Community Center, and was project coordinator for construction of the 1.3 million square feet Lowe's Distribution Center near Minersville.

A 1990 graduate of Shamokin Area High School, Rebuck excelled in academics and athletics, reaching the top of his class in horticulture and was captain of the varsity wrestling team.

He continued his education with the Central Pennsylvania Carpenter's Joint Apprenticeship Training Center, earning the Golden Hammer award for being at the top of his class.

Rebuck said education has always been very important to him, believing people should continually push themselves to learn and reach their full potential.

Rebuck resides in Paxinos with his wife, Pamela, and their son, Brett, who is a student at the Shamokin Area Jr./Sr. High School, and 2-year-old daughter, Olivia. He is a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and biking and he also relaxes by tending to his garden and farming.
