COAL TOWNSHIP - The Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging says older Pennsylvanians should be cautious of contractors and charity scams in the wake of widespread flooding in the central and eastern regions of the state.
If someone you do not know ask for a charitable donation, require them to verify the charity's legitimacy. Ask questions about the charity, such as how much of the charities' funds go to the charitable purpose, operating expenses and fundraising expenses. If you decide to donate, write checks directly to the charity and do not give cash donations.
Be suspicious of contractors who do not want to sign a contract or are not willing to verify a business address. Additionally, make sure any potential contractor you hire is on the Home Improvement Contractor List, which is available through the Attorney General's office.
If you know of anyone who have been contacted by someone fraudulently or know someone who is a victim of fraud, contact the department of aging's elder abuse hotline at (800) 490-8505. For more information, go to www.portal.state.pa.us.
