Contractor charged
NORTHUMBERLAND - Point Township Police charged a contractor with forgery and related charges after an investigation revealed the theft of a check in April.
Charles M. Smith, 45, of Mifflinburg, owner of His Way Construction, was doing work for a Locust Street homeowner and stole a check from the victim's checkbook. He forged the victim's signature in writing a $8,245 check to himself, police said.
Smith also allegedly created a fictitious work proposal to attempt to confuse the homeowner and substantiate the stolen check. The investigation showed that this was not an isolated incident by Smith, and there have been other victims in different communities. Anyone believing they have been victimized is encouraged to contact local authorities.
Police charged Smith with forgery, theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property and deceptive or fraudulent business practices.
