Fire Prevention Week activities set
MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Fire Department has announce events for Fire Prevention Week, today through Saturday.
At 9 a.m. today at Grace United Church of Christ, a service will be held in honor of emergency personnel. Firefighters and EMS personnel are asked to attend.
On Wednesday, the fire department will visit Winnie the Pooh Daycare at 9 a.m., hosted by the Anthracite Steam Fire Company. From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, the Mount Carmel Fire Department will host various activities in the Town Park with a smoke maze, stop, drop and roll activity, and a fire extinguisher demonstration.
The fire department hosted Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts at the Clover Hose Company Wednesday and treated them to pizza and soda.
Group to host candidates forum
LEWISBURG - All five candidates for Northumberland County commissioner are expected to attend a forum Monday hosted by Susquehanna Valley Conservatives.
The public event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the meeting room inside Best Western Inn, next door to Country Cupboard Restaurant, Route 15.
Incumbents are Democrats Frank Sawicki and Vinny Clausi and Republican Merle Phillips. Also seeking office are Republican Rick Shoch and independent candidate Stephen Bridy.
Each candidate will have three minutes to state their candidacy goals, followed by a question-and-answer session from the audience, moderated by Paul Hartman of the Valley Conservatives, which encompasses Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.
Halloween parade Oct. 29
MOUNT CARMEL - The annual Mount Carmel Halloween prade will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 on Oak Street. Registration will start at 10 a.m. at Second and Oak streets. In case of rain, the rescheduled date will be on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
Street sweeper schedule listed
MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Street Department will be running the normal street sweeper schedule for October. All residents are asked to move their vehicles the week of Oct. 16 to 22.
Secondary streets will be swept the first and second Wednesday, and Oak Street, from Avenue to Sixth Street, will be swept every Wednesday and Friday.
Flooding topic of borough meeting
MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Borough Council will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in borough hall on Fourth and Vine streets for the purpose of discussing possible solutions to the Shamokin Creek flooding. All residents directly affected by the recent flooding are invited to attend and participate in the discussion.
The Flood of 2011 and other heavy rainstorms have flooded the creek along Water Street, causing extensive damage to residents' properties.
While there is a flood control project in the works, construction isn't expect to begin until next spring.
