Darryl Kashner, an employee with the Coal Township Street Department, moves the front-end loader Wednesday that he filled with Christmas trees that were discarded along Route 901 near Excelsior. Habitat for Wildlife (HFW) in past years encouraged drop-off of the trees, which it used for wildlife cover on abandoned coal lands. While HFW did not request trees this year because of the loss of its lease of county land, many people out of habit still dropped them at the site. HFW President Dave Kaleta told the township of the Fairview Gun Club's interest in the trees, and that's where the street department hauled them to on Wednesday. They'll be used for similar purposes on Fairview land in the township's west end. The trees were then hauled to the Fairview Gun Club where they will be used as rabbit cover.
