Jeff Kashner, a newcomer to the political arena, is a candidate for the Shamokin Area School Board. He has cross-filed on both Republican and Democratic tickets. Kashner is a proud graduate of Shamokin Area and is a lifelong resident of the district.
Kashner married Maxine Appel in 1993, and together they have a son and daughter. Jeffrey, 15, and Taylor, 10. Their children attend Shamokin Area School District, which Kashner said gives him a vested interest in how the district operates.
Kashner is a member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council for two terms. He has also volunteered as a coach since 2001 in Little League baseball, youth basketball, youth football league, and now, youth volleyball league.
With the recent proposed state budget cuts planned for education, Kashner said he realizes the next board will have to make difficult choices. He said he promises not to consider these choices lightly. "In making these decisions, I will consider the district taxpayers and students," Kashner remarked. "They will come first in my decision-making process. I believe the future board will have to work together to accomplish this in difficult times."
Kashner said bullying is a concern in our district. He said extra measures need to be taken to ensure students' safety, and believes safeguards can be accomplished by working closely with the district administration.
Kashner said the public has a right to a voice, and he wants to be that voice. He is a manager at Knoebels Amusement Resort and has experience dealing with the public.
Kashner promises to run a clean campaign. "I am asking for your vote," he said. "The public can be assured that a vote for me means a vote for fair decisions and genuine concern for the students and taxpayers of Shamokin Area School District."
