STRONG - An elderly woman was struck in the village of Strong Thursday morning in a low impact collision as she was attempting to cross Route 61, according to Mount Carmel Township Police Department.

Chief Brian Hollenbush reported Martha Meredith, 82, of 156 Front St., Strong, and a female friend were on the northbound berm with intentions to walk across the highway near Turkey Hill to get in a car that would take them to church.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 6:52 a.m.

Diane Lentini, 66, of Mount Carmel, was traveling north in a 2004 Blue Honda Odyssey when she came across the women. Although the second woman stopped, Meredith continued walking and was struck by the driver's side fender and hood area.

Hollenbush said the woman went airborne and landed in the southbound passing lane. She was taken to Geisinger Medical Center by ambulance because Life Flight was unavailable due to the weather.

"She was conscious, but in need of medical treatment," Hollenbush said.

Police were assisted at the scene by Strong Fire Company, Kulpmont East End Fire Company and AREA Services.

Meredith was listed in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Thursday evening.

Lentini, who reportedly was driving under 30 mph, will not be charged, Hollenbush said.
