Flood assistance

The following information applies to flood assistance in the region. To report other efforts, call 644-6397, extension 5; write to editorial@newsitem.com; fax 648-7581; or post on our Facebook page.

Send cash

Janet Curtis, executive director of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, said the best thing people can do to help flood victims is to make a cash donation. Checks can be sent to the American Red Cross Schuylkill and Eastern Northumberland County Chapter, 1402 Laurel Blvd. Pottsville 17901; or, made by credit card by calling 339-1246. To earmark the donations for flood relief efforts, mark "Flood" on the check memo or tell the volunteer when calling.

Cleanup kits

The Red Cross chapter delivered cleanup kits to the Central Susquehanna Opportunities (CSO) office at the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center, Eighth and Arch streets, Monday afternoon. The kits consist of push brooms, buckets, gloves, rakes, shovels, mops, cleaning fluids and disinfectant. Visit CSO from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or call 644-6575 ext. 171 for more information.

Cleaning supplies

CSO in Shamokin is also collecting cleaning supplies for flood victims. There is a desperate need for push brooms, "rubbers" to slip over shoes or other means of protecting footwear, and spray bottles. Items can be taken to the CSO office.

Appliance collection

HandUp Foundation, Milton, will conduct a collection from 8 to 11 a.m. today at the Rock Street skate park, next to the pool on North Rock Street, for homeowners who need to dispose of washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers and other appliances.

The need for a second collection will be assessed after today's effort.
