Roads and property in the greater Sunbury area experienced considerably flooding Wednesday.
Although county emergency crews were watching the Fantasy Island Campgrounds on the island between Sunbury and Northumberland, the property had not yet flooded in the late afternoon. Shikellamy State Park on the Marina side was closed.
Route 61 was waterlogged in several places. County officials built a temporary retaining wall near Dominoes Pizza to stop traffic and increasing water levels. The parking lots of the pizza shop, other local businesses and houses were flooded, and some cars were still parked in the deep water. One car alarm started going off, but eventually stopped.
At the Hamilton Underpass leading out of Sunbury toward Shamokin, the creek rose swiftly, blocking all traffic in both directions. Less than a half mile away near the intersection of Route 61 and Route 890, the bridge at The Den was overtaken by rushing water.
Snydertown Road between Sunbury and Elysburg was also closed because of water rushing off the mountain and onto the road.
At the intersection of Friedline Road and Route 4005 in Snydertown, an above-ground swimming pool was surrounded by muddy creek water that almost reached the top of the pool walls.
