Mount Carmel's Anthracite Fire Company to move forward with building plans

MOUNT CARMEL - Anthracite Steam Fire Company will pay $6,000 to finalize design plans to apply for a grant for an addition to its firehouse, the chief of the company told Mount Carmel Borough Council members Thursday night.

"And we'd like the council members to come and see (the plans so far)," said Anthracite Chief Jack Williams Jr.

Council Vice President Leroy "Chico" Moser told Williams he took offense to the chief's recent comments that council doesn't support Anthracite.

"I do support you, and still will. This council will help you as much as we can," Moser said.

Moser noted the council has provided the company with $107,462 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money toward the purchase of a fire truck and renovations over a five-year period.

The dilemma Anthracite is facing concerns its newly-purchased ladder truck, which is too tall to fit in the current firehouse.

Anthracite members want to expand into the town park to build an addition to the existing firehouse to accommodate the truck.

The truck is being housed at the Mount Carmel Rescue Squad, but it's size is causing problems there as well.

Williams has said he didn't feel as if council is willing to support their goals, most recently evidenced by the council's refusal to allow public solicitation for the project. The committee stopped raising money until council committed to support the addition for the truck, not wanting to spend an additional $6,000 to finish the plans if they were going to be voted down.

In order to apply for grants, only 40 percent of the plans need to be finished; the company has approximately 35 percent done.

Several members of the council pointed out they voted last year to support Anthracite's efforts as long as the borough didn't have to spend any money.

The council agreed Thursday to meet with fire company officials Monday to view and discuss blueprints.

Council also approved the Clover Hose Fire Company to host a 9/11 ceremony on Sept. 11 with a patriotic car show and a parade from Second and Oak streets.
